Lisbon

Tower of Belém

Erected strategically on the north bank of the River Tagus between 1514 and 1520 for the defence of Lisbon, it is one of the jewels of architecture during the reign of King Manuel I.

The Belém tower is a benchmark in architecture, a symbol of the country's specificity that involves a privileged dialogue with other cultures and civilisations. A guardian of Portugal's universality and individuality, the monument confirmed its status when it was classified as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1983.
